Daniel Fields was the sixth round selection of the Detroit Tigers in the 2009 MLB Amateur Draft. The pick was widely recognized in the Detroit area since Fields played his ball at nearby University of Detroit-Jesuit High School and was a standout athlete in baseball and basketball.
Fields started his proffesional career last season with the Single-A Lakeland Flying Tigers where he hit .240 with eight home runs, 37 RBIs and a .996 fielding percentage in centerfield.
I had an opportunity to have a quick chat with Daniel, here is what he said on a few questions regarding his high school years, baseball and his expectations this Spring Training.
1. Playing your high school ball at Detroit Jesuit, were you always a fan of the Tigers?
DF: Yes I definitely was a Tigers fan growing up. My dad played for the Tigers and he also coached for them so I was a huge Tigers fan.
2. Did you look up to any players from the Tigers while you were in high school?
DF: Yeah I looked up to Curtis Granderson in my high school days.
3. What did it mean for you to be selected in the 6th round of the 2009 draft by your hometown Major League team?
DF: It meant a whole lot to me. It was a dream come true and I am very happy that it happened.
4. What was your reaction to the switch from shortstop to centerfield before the 2010 season?
DF: I was fine with the switch to the outfield. I always knew in the back of mind that it could happen because every scout I talked to told me that. But it was fine and I like the move.
5. What skills that you had at shortstop allowed you to become the great centerfielder you are now?
DF: Reaction time definitely helped a lot by being in the infield. Getting that first quick step is always key.
6. How is your relationship with the coaches for the Flying Tigers?
DF: My relationship with the coaches was really great. They definitely helped out a lot with me and I am very thankful for that.
7. Which player(s) did you hang out with the most before and after games with Lakeland?
DF: Last year I hung out with my roommates a lot that I lived with during the year. So that was Charlie Furbush, Mark Sorenson, Jacob Turner, Matt Little, and Tyler Conn.
8. During Spring Training, what are you trying to prove to Dave Dombrowski and Jim Leyland?
DF: I am trying to prove that I am ready to earn a job for the AA team and hopefully play well enough there that I can get a september call up. I have been working really hard this offseason so it should pay off.
9. Do you look up to any players in the organization right now (MLB or any level)?
DF: I would say Brandon Inge. I have known Brandon since I was young because he played for my dad back in the day. So we go back a little ways.
